What Are You Asking For?

In this BLOG post, I’m confronting the notion of asking God for things. Not just material, mind you, I mean things, as in; peace, help, health and the list could go on. We all, prayer in hand, (or is it on knee) are constantly asking God for something. As a student, it was tests; they were great motivators of prayer. As a father, I’ve wept and prayed for my babies in their sickness, seeking the Lord’s touch and His healing. As a sinner, my prayer was to receive His salvation. As a Christian, I have to seek the Lord for forgiveness, help, assistance and provision, even the Lord’s Prayer mentions “give us our daily bread” doesn’t it?

So, it is not a criticism of asking for things that I address. No, I am asking a question. My question is, “What are you seeking God for, ultimately?” Is he a Santa Claus? By that I mean, are you JUST asking for stuff. Is your prayer life and communion with God about seeking His holiness, His righteousness or is it so much shallower. In seeking God, are you seeking your benefactor, your provider of things or is it your Sovereign, your LORD!

I struggle in this area, greatly. I struggle with seeking God on His ground, boldly coming to Him, as the writer of the book of Hebrew, exclaims. I have difficulty, as Isaiah, finding voice, that I know is unworthy to even speak of Him, let alone to Him. I struggle to know Him and to be known of Him. I am pushing in, pushing forward into a realm of light, which blinds the eyes darkened by sins, that can’t see, but by the touch of His Hand, I may see Him, peeking through the cleft of the rock!

In seeking a more intimate fellowship, I discover, I am asking, again. I’m asking for something from Him, for me, again. I am asking for what I cannot do for me. Oh, Lord, please help us find you, seek us out, search us and know us, for we are unable to find you, but that you would show yourself to us. I can’t seem to be so critical now, as I see myself, begging again for Him, to give me something! But, this time, I am seeking more than just my ‘daily bread’, no, I am seeking HIM! Are you?

GOD BLESS

TONY
