REVIVAL

Revival...what exactly does that mean? A common occurrence in the church world is the idea of 'revival'. Can we 'have' revival, or call for it, pray it down or eve fast our way into 'it'. In Psalms 85:6, the Psalmist said, “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" I've heard this verse used many times to justify the need for 'revival'. Churches will have a week of 'Revival' a weekend or as a local church here in my area has done; become a 'Revival Center” (which I've taken to mean that they are in a perpetual state of revival).

What I believe is possible is: REVIVAL. By that I mean, people can be revived. For those unregenerate, they can be revived into a new relationship with God, for the cold Christian, they can be renewed in their commitment and love for Christ and finally, the mature Christian can be revived and strengthened in their walk with Jesus and renewed in their faith. What I don't believe we can do is change God. I can't make God do anything! I can't make Him save anyone, send His Holy Spirit, or Revive anybody.

So, you may ask, what do I think we do in the process of 'revival'? I do believe we change US! In the midst of revival, we are more sincere, faithful and dedicated to the cause of Christ at times of revival. Yes, I do believe it can be overdone and lose its meaning of revival. But, at those times when a community of Christians come together in common cause of 'revival', revival can be felt. Why do we see revival have effects on lost and saved alike? It is a change in attitude, especially within one's self.

I know in my experience of over 40 years of revival (at intermittent times, of course), I've often noticed that as a revival is felt to be successful (to me), it started with myself seeking and desiring the blessing of revival. “Revival starts with us,” is said often in churches across America and other places, and its meaning is well intentioned and true. If we seek revival, God is faithful to grant us access to Him and His blessings, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:3). God, in His infinite power and wisdom, knows we need a reviving at times. He promises to be found by us if we seek Him. And, that's what REVIVAL is truly all about; a closer relationship and fellowship with GOD!
