Breaking down is a fact of the universe. It is even a scientific concept. It is known as the Second Law of Thermodynamics. It is simply stated as the universe breaking down, or as the following description explains, it is a fact that our world (as well as the whole universe) is operating under.

“The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that "in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state." This is also commonly referred to as entropy. A watch spring-driven watch will run until the potential energy in the spring is converted, and not again until energy is reapplied to the spring to rewind it. A car that has run out of gas will not run again until you walk 10 miles to a gas station and refuel the car. Once the potential energy locked in carbohydrates is converted into kinetic energy (energy in use or motion), the organism will get no more until energy is input again. In the process of energy transfer, some energy will dissipate as heat. Entropy is a measure of disorder: cells are NOT disordered and so have low entropy. The flow of energy maintains order and life. Entropy wins when organisms cease to take in energy and die.” (http://www2.estrellamountain.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/biobookener1.html)

So, as you see, life is leaning toward disorder, breaking down and brokenness. It is a Biblical concept, too. ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,’ (Luke 4:18-KJV) Jesus, here speaking in this verse, acknowledges that life has broken people.

That is the message, help for the hurting. We are all the vessels of cracks and chips. There is no one with perfect, complete, togetherness. No, we all deal with issues and hurts. To us, he says, in Matthew 12:20 (KJV) ‘A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.’ Jesus came to the broken and hurting. He is aware of our frailty. ‘For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.’ (Psalm 103:14-KJV) We are merely dust and a little water.

God has not forsaken His creation, though. The next verse in Luke he says, ‘To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.’ (Luke 4:19-KJV) Jesus message to the crowd that day in His hometown and to us today, He is here for the broken. ‘Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. ‘ (1 Peter 5:7-KJV) His message to you is this, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ (Matthew 11:28-30-KJV)
